BMSGH members must include their current membership number on all correspondence to qualify for the members discount of 25%. STAFFORDSHIRE PROBATE LISTS The STAFFORDSHIRE PROBATE LISTS are indexes of the wills and administrations held by the Lichfield Joint Record Office, for all the ancient parishes of Staffordshire. There is one main exception, this is the parish of ROWLEY REGIS, the records of this parish are held by the Worcestershire Record Office. (We do index about 20 records, which are strays held by the LJRO, all post 1830.) In order to assist members with their search for an ancestors will, the lists were compiled in parishes and in date sections. The earliest wills date from the early part of the 16th Century and the lists finish in 1857. Wills after this date are held by the Principal Registry Office. Postal searches for wills after this date should be addressed to The Postal Searches and Copies Department, The Probate Registry, Duncombe Place, York YO1 7EA UK, for which there is a fee £5-00. It should be remembered that earlier wills may have been proved in a higher court and therefore sources such as the Prerogative Court of Canterbury should also be searched. These can be found at the Public Record Office (PRO) at Kew. If you are fortunate and obtain dates of probate, then copies of the documents can be obtained from the Lichfield Record Office, the Friary, Lichfield, Staffordshire WS13 6OG. They will require you to supply the name, the date of probate and the parish. The costs depend on the number of pages in the document involved. They will also require you to complete one of their copyright forms, which they will supply. The Society's search charge of £4.00 includes up to three individual extracted entries. HOWEVER, the Staffordshire Probate lists can still only be searched by parish, therefore during the immediate future our charge will be £4.00 per surname per parish for a search of the probate lists. For this you will get all instances of the surname in the parish, up to a maximum of thirty entries, if there are any!!. If there are none, then at least you will know that your ancestors from that parish did not leave wills to be proved in local courts or require an administration when they died, or if they did, these have not survived. There are some 180 ancient parishes and with about ten sections to each parish this means that it is far too time consuming to search all these lists, so until such time as they are all transferred to computer we are unable to undertake any county searches.
