BMSGH members must include their current membership number on all correspondence to qualify for the members discount 25%. STAFFORDSHIRE BURIAL INDEX The STAFFORDSHIRE BURIAL INDEX contains the burial entries from parish registers and bishops transcripts. A few from other sources are also included, such as some Monumental Inscriptions and Quaker burials. There is also the occasional entry from a parish bordering Staffordshire and some burials of Staffordshire people who were born outside the county. The entries start with the beginning of the registers and continue up to and including 1837, when civil registration began. The information contained for each entry can vary from person to person with a minimum of surname, date and parish, but might also include relationships, places of abode, cause of death, etc..
The Index is thought to be complete containing all available information from all surviving registers or bishops transcripts for the county. There is currently a team working on transferring the Index to computer, this project will take a number of years to complete and was started in 1998. At the time of this update the project is working on the letter S, however there are outstanding boxes for many of the previous letters. This program is likely to discover if there are any unknown gaps, if any are found they will be rectified as soon as possible. Please note that DUDLEY and OLDBURY are in the county of WORCESTERSHIRE and, although not Staffordshire, very small parts of these parishes are currently included. Due to a number of requests Tony Bowers has compiled a list of parishes and other sources that are included in the Index. This list has been compiled from various working records that were made during the formative years of this Index and is included herewith. It is said that there are in excess of 1,000,000 entries (Tony says he has not counted them), so people wishing to use the Index should note that they may find anywhere between nil and 15,000 entries for the surname they require. Most people find that there are more entries in the Index for the name that they are researching than they imagined. Because of the size of the Index and the numbers of volunteers who have helped on the Index over the years, 100% accuracy can not be guaranteed, so we recommend that having found an entry you require, you then check with the original sources. We are extremely grateful if, in the unlikely event that you find an error, you let us know in order that it can be verified and the Index corrected. We hope that the Staffordshire Burial Index will be of help to you, whether you are searching for an individuals burial or you are interested in a one name study and require all entries found throughout the county, or indeed anything between these. It is helpful if you are able to give examples of any variant spellings that you require, although we do try to include close variants when quotations are given.
