THE 'LINK' SCHEME

If you are a member of BMSGH and you need a pair of hands in some distant County Record Office, this is what you do

1. Find out the location of the document you need to have searched. This is very important, so that no one is sent on an unnecessary journey.
2. Ask the co-ordinator for a LINK to that particular place.

You may simply send her a self-addressed stamped envelope with the name of the CRO inside the flap - no need to write a letter! (Overseas members, one IRC instead of stamp)

If a LINK is available you will be sent one name, address and an estimate of expenses.

Any request that cannot be answered immediately may be held for up to 3 months, pending an available LINK.

3. Always enclose expenses and an SAE with your letter to your LINK and pose only ONE question at a time. Most LINKS will not have time to search an entire register.

Explain which document needs searching and include any relevant information you already have.

Your LINK will make a visit on your behalf and report back within 6 weeks, or will tell you immediately that it can't be done.

In order for this scheme to work we need lots of people volunteering to do the research, so if you feel you can spare a little time to help another member please send the name(s) of the archive(s) to which you have access, an estimate of your expenses and your name and address to:

Elaine Zair, 69 Downs Park East, Bristol BS6 7QG

We hope we shall be able, eventually, to LINK any member to any British Archive source (and later perhaps in the USA and Australia too) but it all depends on you!
